On one of the narrow back streets of the Gotic quarters we can find the relatively new Bao Bao with the trendy Asian street food Bao buns.
At Bao Bao they serve up some hot Bao´s with different fillings and toppings. We can find the Asian steamed buns made with rice flour, brimming with tender citronella veal, BBQ chicken, fried calamari, grilled tofu or char sui pork.
Every bun has their contrasting topping, deliciousness in form of fried avocado, pickled onion, algae, daikon or peanut and much more!
To combine and to get the balance just right between salty, sour, sweet and spicy, can be hard, but I find that at Bao Bao they done their homework.
Their bao´s are they biggest ones I seen in Barcelona, so with two of them you will fill your belly. But if you like me is a food lover, you might want three.
You can just blame it on that you want to try as many varieties as possible since they are cheap (4€)!
The creator behind these bao´s is chef Thang Pham, for the ones that been around Barcelona for a while probably know this talented man from the restaurant ME, that sadly closed down a couple of years ago. I have fond memories from that place, so when I heard that this man was behind the creation of the bao´s at Bao Bao I knew I was in for a treat!
For the ones that are new to his name, Thang Pham was born in Vietnam, then travelled and worked through the States and Europe, the distinct flavours we can experience in each of the bao´s are encircling his journey and giving each one it´s own personality.
The locale is designed to work for the type of clients frequenting this part of the Gotico neighbourhood in Barcelona, people on the run that wants a good, quick and tasty bite that can be enjoyed at Bao Bao or for take away. There´re no tables to sit down for a chitchat, but two long bars with high seats for a rapid meal or snack.
Just 3 weeks ago Bao Bao opened their second locale in Sants (Carrer Riego 23), at this restaurant they changed the concept, we can find both a cocktail bar and bao´s with proper seats. Soon they are extending the menu with ramen and Bao Wagyu burgers! Yep, you will for sure see that soon on Appetite & other stories!
