El Casal Restaurant, Born

Restaurant El Casal a hidden gem in the heart of Born.

The square Victor Balaguer ain´t one of the squares in Barcelona that people can easily point out on the map. It´s central, it´s quiet and with one lucky restaurant on it, El Casal.

Sardine rillette

The locale of the restaurant has an authentic decoration with shared tables and bistro chairs, on the radio French old music plays and transports us to a little lost village in the countryside.

El Casal opens early in the morning for breakfast with toasts, eggs, and omelette or if you want something smaller and sweet why not try a chocolate croissant?

In the afternoon they have a selection of tapas and sandwiches on the menu.

At midday they offer their clients a great value lunch menu, for just 11,25€ you get starter, main and dessert or coffee/tea.

We visited restaurant El Casal on our lunch break, the dining area filled up as we sat down and the terrace already jammed when we arrived, yep the nice weather is hit town! The crowed mixed young and old, tourists and locals all enjoying their break in this corner part of Barcelona.

The food is well cooked, the guys at El Casal uses seasonal products from Catalonia, so in the dishes we could find wintery cabbage mixed up with green peas that are hitting the vegetable stands in spring.

Apple tarte Tatin and chocolate cake

The owners are from Normandy in France, and we tasted the French touch in the form of sardine rillettes and apple tarte Tatin, that were to die for btw.

*** This might feel far off in the future but I think worth writing down in your agenda already, the 3rd Thursday in November ever year El Casal celebrates Beaujolais Nouveau day, the young wine flows and oysters coming directly from Normandy. The normally quiet square turns in to a lively street party.

(Beaujolais Nouveau Day is marked in France on the third Thursday in November with fireworks, music and festivals. Under French law, the wine is released at 12:01 a.m., just weeks after the wine’s grapes have been harvested. Parties are held throughout the country and further afield to celebrate the first wine of the season.)
