Ferment 9, Cultured food and drinks, Sant Antoni is Barcelona’s first shop dedicated only to prebiotics, probiotics and fermentation.
AT FIRST SIGHT
Walking into Ferment 9 in Barcelona feels like a small modern supermarket, but as you look closer it’s not your typical shop.
As said before Ferment 9 does cultured food and drinks either to buy by weight over the delicatessen counter or prepacked.
You find all types of fermented vegetables, a great variety of Korean kimchi’s, spicy fermented antipasto, classic and non-classic sauerkraut, fermented RAW Sriracha and the list goes on.
If you are more a hands on kind of person Ferment 9 also sells start kits for fermenting at home, Scoby to make your own kombucha, drink starters, water kefir tibicos and much more.
As I got chatting with owner Matt, who’s Canadian by the way and since young been obsessed with fermentation of all kind, he offered me a tour of the shop, workshop and fermentation chamber.
Super cool to see where they prepare all the fermentation, elaborating new products and track all of the goods.
Ferment 9 is such an awesome shop and so worth a visit, not just because it’s different. Because we should all treat our «second brain» a bit better, happy tummy is good mood and helping out with long-term health.
DISHES TRIED AND TESTED
On the first visit, I walked away with small selection fermented products. I already knew some products that I wanted to buy, nevertheless, I asked Matt what I could not miss out on as a first timer at Ferment 9.
Down in by bag went hot Dragon Kimchi spiced up with Gochugaru (Korean chili powder) and the milder Baechu Kimchi. Coconut Kefir for my granola breakfast bowl.
Matt asked if I liked sauerkraut, just the sheer name makes me cringe, I told him truthfully that I seriously DO NOT like it. Although he made me try unpasteurized sauerkraut, and OMG we are talking about something totally different. The same day I finished off the whole box in one go with my dinner. For any fellow Swede reading this, the texture and a hint of the taste made me think of Swedish pizza salad.
I also went for some water Kefir with blueberry and Kombucha gold, which neither lasted very long at home.
