Fresh Mediterranean cuisine at restaurant Cometa Pla. A gem well-hidden on the small street Cometa 5, in the centric gothic quarters of Barcelona.
Cometa Pla is the third restaurant from the owners of restaurant PLA in Gotico and tapas bar del PLA in Born. Tapas bar PLA I personally love, and I might visit more often that I should, since if it’s great, it’s great, right?
Do to the restaurant’s concealed whereabouts, it can be hard to find the location. All the better for us, that wants to keep it under the radar slightly longer. Any day now though, it will become one of Barcelona’s worst kept secrets.
In the latest years it has opened up quit a few restaurants in Barcelona working in a more conscious way. Using organic and locally sourced produce with an aim for a more sustainable way of working, and Cometa Pla is one of them.
Restaurant Cometa Pla presents a short menu with plates thought to share. The kitchen is organic and mainly with locally sourced ingredients. Their main focus lies on vegetables and grains, however we can also find fish, seafood, lamb, pork and veal.
The dishes are ingenious, in several I can feel inspiration from the Asian and South American cuisines, ceviche with vegetables and squid with white kimchi. Fresh, light and crips notes are swiping through our palates while we are savour the dishes.
The five plates we share were vegetable and seafood orientated. We ended food experience with a chocolate Ganache with oil and salt. They recommend 2 to 3 dishes per person.
Catalonia and Barcelona has become synonym with natural wines for the rest of Spain. Many of the producers or wine makers of natural wine are located within the Catalan region.
But what is natural wine? It’s wine that are produced without adding or removing anything durning the whole wine process (without chemical and minimum of technology interference). From growing the vines, the harvest, fermentation, pressing and bottling, (please correct me if I’m wrong).
Barcelona counts with not less then three fairs for natural wines. Barranco Oscuro, Vella Terra and Simplesmente Vihno, as a result the public can get to know and try international and national natural wines.
The wine list at Cometa Pla is compost of natural wines and artisan beer from different part of Spain, as a result the «terroir» is different in each and every one of them.
The natural wines are of a different character then the conventional wines, therefore as a first timer they might seem off, with defects.
At Cometa Pla they know the importance of letting their guest sip the wine before making their choice, because we all have distinct palates.
The restaurant is a cosy and tranquil spot in the other so busy Gothic quarter. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. Perfect to visit with friends that enjoy good food and wine!
