Paella at TOC al Mar – We are all slowly coming back from our vacations with that feeling of “it can´t be true that the summer is coming to an end, it feels like it just started”! ‘
But wait one second, here in Spain there´s great weather until October, so why not plan with friends and loved one a trip over the weekend up the Costa Brava for a swim in the crystal clear waters and of course enjoy a great meal to cure that post-vacation blues!

So if your taking my advice of a mini break you should for sure visit restaurant TOC Al Mar at Platja d´Aiguablava, Begur.
The drive from Barcelona to TOC Al Mar is approx. 1h 45 min. The last 8 minutes to get to the restaurant you need to drive down a steep and winding road with the most spectacular view.
Once down you arrive to a small bay or a small cala as they are called in spanish, here you can find TOC Al Mar that is located on the sandy beach, it truly has an privileged location.
The restaurant has been open since 2011 and open between Easter and mid October and is run by Santi Colominas and Sandra Baliarda.

TOC Al Mar is a Mediterranean seafood restaurant that is specialist in oak grilled fish. Local fishermen capture the fresh fish in the area.
We can find seabass, snappers, sardines, sea bream and croaker among the different varieties.
From Palamos they have the red prawns, authentic red lobster from Begur´s Cape. They also prepare diverse rice dishes. Paella, lobster rice or black rice dosen´t sound to bad does it?

On our visit we enjoyed a char-grilled romaine lettuce with anchovies and tomato- 9,50€ as a starter, very rich in flavour, the mix of smoked and burnt mixed with the salty punch of the anchovies and sweetness of the tomato.

For main we were dying for some paella, so our choice fell on “TOC AL MAR” – 18€/person, filled with prawns, mussels, clams and squid. It was very savoury, but could have been dryer to get “socarrat” in the bottom of the pan.
Socarrat is the effect of “burned” that occurs at the base of the pan when fat and sugar are released from the ingredients that under heat gets caramelized.

The rice dishes are made to order for minimum 2 persons, they only serve rice dishes during the lunch hour.
When it comes to rice dishes, they are always very filling so there is no need for many starters, we did not manage to finish our Paella.

The seats of TOC Al Mar are mainly outside but with a small number of tables inside. The tables come in fun colour mixes, which gives the restaurant a informal and relaxed vibe. The clients are a mixed crowd, from hikers, sunbathers to more dressed looks.
